As artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies continue to advance, the interest of the potential negative consequences on society of AI or ML research has also grown. AI technology has the potential to transform social care commissioning by automating some of the processes involved in decision-making, data analysis, and resource allocation. Algorithms can be used to analyse large datasets to identify patterns and trends in social care needs and outcomes, which can help commissioners better target resources and interventions to those who need them most. AI tools can also help monitor the quality of care delivered by providers, analysing data from care visits and identifying potential areas of concern.
However, there are also potential risks and challenges associated with the use of AI in social care commissioning, such as concerns around data privacy and bias, as well as the potential for AI to worsen existing inequalities in access to care.
In preparation for the increasing emergence of AI technology, we should consider how it can be used as a tool and equally aware of the limitations, such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. As with all technology to consider its potential impact and the ethical and social implications.
